I saw an article on the FP the other day about buying cheap tools. Ludicrous I say! You got to have good tools to work on your cars.
My tool setup car tools in the red and black with carpentry tools in the cabinet (I put ikea LED strips in it for lighting, it works great). The MAC box is awesome. Even though it is the cheapest in their line of roll cabinets, it is built to the same high standards as their high end boxes.
A wide array of sockets is a must.
My favorite drawer, so much shiny in one spot. I clean them in an oiled rag when I'm done.
You have to have a drawer of Jeremy. MAC tools are great, but are very expensive. A great thing is you can have your tools protected under your home insurance.

I buy all my tools in an off brand supermarket. Usually from the cheap aisle where they sell damaged stuff for a discount. Soldering iron and a 6mm to 22mm spanner set for $15 is hard to pass up...

Mac tools are great but like you said very expensive. I tend to buy Craftsman tools way less money but still have lifetime warranty. In 15 years all that ever broke was a 3/8" drive ratchet(my fault, should've used a breaker bar) and the tip on a phillips screwdriver. both got replaced on the spot no questions asked.

AND THEY'RE ALL ORGANIZED!!

Well, Im an advocate for cheap tools. Kind of. I like spending good money on air tools, ratchets, and specialty tools. But sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc. Craftsman is fine. I actually have a set of impact sockets that have served me many years from, eek harbor freight.

Wish I had the room for a roller chest. I'm pretty sure I have the bare minimum square footage that legally qualifies as a 2-car garage. It's socket holders on pegboard for me.

I think I should get a really expensive tool cabinet, then fill it with the cheapest Chinese pot-metal tools I can find.
Or I could just keep my Performax cabinet and my mix of Ideal, Proto, Kobalt and Craftsman tools, that way I have so-so quality everything.

I quit buying craftsman in the last 5 years or so as they have moved production to China. I've started buying SK, Proto, and Armstrong. All very good quality.

I worked at a jiffy lube and they had tools like that. The sockets were okay, they were usually too loose and the chrome would flake off. The ratchets were utter garbage it wasn't long after we would get a cheapie that teeth were lost. If you don't use them often or for hard work you'll be ok. Try Craigslist or even a pawn shop, you'll find high end tools for cheap.

I agree they are a nice middle ground.

That annoys me and they are no cheaper for it.

Mine have actually been fine so far, although I still borrow off family members sometimes. I think I might start looking used for tools, being a student brings up certain monetary limitations...

I have to say I haven't bought tools in at least 5 years other than a new breaker bar(I think I left mine in a car I sold) I had no idea they moved production to China.
I am a dealer for Snap-On's industrial brands (Williams,Bahco,CDI torque) and I can buy these at 5% over cost. when I finally give in and buy my big tool chest it will probably be Williams.

Last time I was at the dealer convention I got a lovely pamphlet for Lista tool boxes. My god are those beautiful. I got to keep pinching pennies.

A friend works at SK, he brought by a bunch of sockets in various stages of completion a while ago, very nice tools.

True that. I got these when I went to be a school to be a mechanic. They were half off.

OH DROOL. I've always drooled over the Snap-on and Mac products at my dad's shop but holy crap I can't bring myself to purchase them =( Well, granted now that I'm an "adult" I haven't needed to replace anything since I slowly built my mostly craftsmen selection. Perhaps I'll slowly start upgrading some of my stack.

Check Craigslist or pawn shops. For used tools at reduced prices.

Your expensive tools look much cleaner than my cheap tools...

Because I clean them when I put them back.

*heavy sigh*.
All my work [in a corrosive environment] is open air and dirt floor. Engines, transmissions, etc. I plug holes not for dirt but for centipedes/roaches. Everything rusts, unless it's 316 Stainless (302-305, pit rusts but not structural) or you oil it every 8 weeks whether you use it or not.
*heavy sigh*
